Essential Foods to Help Detox Heavy Metals
Our bodies have an amazing capacity to detoxify and heal. When you consider the toxic load that we are exposed to in our modern world, many people have found ways to thrive, nonetheless. Limiting exposure is essential, but not always possible.
According to a 2021 review:
“Heavy metals enter the human body through the gastrointestinal tract, skin, or via inhalation. Toxic metals have proven to be a major threat to human health, mostly because of their ability to cause membrane and DNA damage, and to perturb protein function and enzyme activity.”
Heavy metals cause the most damage to the brain and nervous system and these harmful effects have been well-documented in the scientific literature. According to a 2019 toxicology textbook:
“Heavy metals toxicity is responsible for many neurodegenerative diseases particularly Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and attention-deficit hyperactive disorders. There are a number of epidemiological, experimental, in vivo and in vitro data which represent the significant association or correlation between the exposure of heavy metals and neurotoxicity.”
Unfortunately, our wireless world that we’ve grown accustom to is likely contributing to the ever-increasing amounts of neurological disorders. One likely mechanism is the effect that electromagnetic radiation has on the blood-brain barrier, which allows toxins, especially heavy metals, to enter the blood supply of the brain.
Specific chiropractic care can help improve the flow of the lymphatic vessels that surrounds the brain, including the removal of heavy metals which have been proven to be harmful to the whole nervous system. Regular, deep, natural sleep is also vitally important for the brain to detoxify and heal. Removing these toxic heavy metals from the body is also essential and certain foods are effective for this, as well.
While all raw greens, fruits and veggies will help to remove heavy metals, some are more effective than others. Some common foods include coriander (cilantro), apples, garlic, blueberries, celery, and even tomatoes, which have been proven to remove cadmium, mercury, and lead from the liver. Lemon water is also helpful, but be sure to also add the peel, which contains compounds that binds with heavy metals. Try to consume at least 5-6 servings of these foods on a daily basis to help clear these toxins more effectively. The detoxifying effect of raw plant foods is yet another reason why this is the foundation of healthy eating.
Modern living has created more neurological problems than ever before and heavy metals are likely a major contributing factor. Specific lifestyle changes can help you to future-proof you brain and nervous system, so you and your loved ones can enjoy a brighter and happier life.
